KALS CONNECT – JANUARY 2026
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The KALS Board Members and I wish everyone a very Happy New Year! The beginning of 2026 is filled with the potential for new experiences and new learning. KALS is here to provide opportunities for both! We have a plethora of courses for you to choose from in person and from the comfort of your home on Zoom. From January to June, the calendar is packed with informative, fun, and creative options. My course list is already mapped out, and I am counting the days until January 5th to register for my “must do” courses and a couple of other courses that I am curious to find out about.
If you forgot to make a New Year’s resolution, KALS can help: consider giving back to your favourite independent learning organization by volunteering in any number of capacities: helping with programming, publicity, planning, being a member of the KALS board, etc. Contact President Nadine Fort (nadinerfort@gmail.com ) to discuss this exciting opportunity to make your 2026 more rewarding.
See you in the classroom, on a field trip or on Zoom!

Meet some of our new January 2026 Instructors
Jan 13 and Jan 20. Claire Garson, one of our youngest presenters ever and the granddaughter of veteran KALS volunteer Mary Jordan, is a devoted backpacker who travels on a shoestring budget. Follow her two 10-month travel sessions. Session 1 takes us around South America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Session 2 finds us in Croatia, Northern India, Nepal, Vietnam and Austria.
Jan 13. Corporal Justin Yacoboski is a Kamloops-based RCMP. Four- year-old Potter is his first full-time canine partner. The dynamic duo will introduce us to the life and work of a police dog and his master.
Jan 23. Renee Stein, Executive Director of the Out of the Cold Shelter Society, has over 33 years of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse. Under her guidance, the Out of the Cold Shelter Society has grown into a full-time, comprehensive support facility that includes Kamloops’ first Seniors Shelter program.
Jan 29. Dr. Laura K. Doan, a professor of early childhood education at Thompson Rivers University, has recently published She’s Still My Mom: Navigating Your Loved One’s Journey with Alzheimer’s.
